God’s Way

2 Chronicles 28

Now in the time of his distress this same King Ahaz became yet more unfaithful to the Lord. For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus which had defeated him and said, ‘Because the gods of the kings of Aram helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.’ But they became the downfall of him and all Israel.

2 Chronicles 28:22-23 NASB

This is one of those passages that does not need a lot of explanation. Basically, it is all laid out pretty plainly for us. King Ahaz was in distress but instead of turning back to the Lord he allowed that distress and worry to be cause for more infidelity.

Ahaz had no fear of the Lord – so he did not respond righteously to the discipline of God. He actually assumed the opposite of what was happening. He thought the false-gods gave victory to Damascus when really it was the Lord that was against him because of his infidelity.

Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them.

Jonah 2:8

I can see myself at times responding like Ahaz. I can see what appears to be an easy path for someone else. Think to myself – God is not helping me, not paying attention to me – So I need to go my own way and make something happen.

And with that comes destruction every time.

Going our own way right? That pride again. It may, in that brief moment be “easier” but it will never lead to the goodness God has and wants for us!

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

James 1:12

If we have a wrong foundation or unbiblical view of God as our heavenly father, then I will have wrong responses to his actions. God can bless me with success, ease and happiness, and I can still have a sinful response. Likewise, if he is allowing hardships and I have a proper view of God as a father who disciplines those he loves, then I will have a repentant and faithful response.

My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by him.

Father, you are the only God. From the beginning you were holy. You are a good Father and faithful redeemer. Even when I left you, you were faithfully pursuing me. Thank you for the grace you have always shown and continue to show me. Your love is plainly evident to me, and I pray my eyes remain open to recognize your love in all that you do and all that you allow in my life. Whether it be in hardship or ease, I pray I am able tofind your hand in every circumstance of my life. Help me to be a faithful steward and good servant. In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen.
