Beware of Things Hidden
Ezra 4
Old enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building The Temple of the God of Israel. They came to Zerubbabel and the family head and said, “We’ll help you build. We worship your God the same as you. We’ve been offering sacrifices to him since Esarhaddon king of Assyria brought us here."
Ezra 4:1-2 MSG
When reading these verses, the sentiment of the people towards the Israelites seems helpful and innocent. We read in the next verse that the Israelites did not accept the help. I imagine that they were able to to see through the words of these people. They had dealt for many years with people who pretended to be on their side. After the rejection, Ezra tells us that the Israelites were pestered by these people for 15 years.
So these people started beating down the morale of the people of Judah, harassing them as they built. They even hired propagandists to sap their resolve. They kept this up for about fifteen years…

As I read this chapter I reflected on my walk with Jesus in this present society. It is easy to feel that society is on our side. In reality, it is not, never will be, and was never meant to be.
For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.
Hebrews 13:14 NLT
It was not meant for me, not for my children, not for their children. Which also means that I should be careful. It means that you should be careful. It means that Jesus needs to be first, all the time, in all things. Every decision should be made with Him.
When help is offered, it may be good help, it may be loving help, or it may be good on the surface with a hidden agenda. When we put Jesus first, He can help us know what is below the surface. Jesus will always be on our side.
