Fasting

ISAIAH 58

Good morning!

This chapter starts by talking about fasting. Fasting usually means avoiding eating for a certain period however, different types of fasting do not always have to do with food.

The Lord points out how his people are pretending to want to be near him and not fasting with the right intentions. He wants them to humble themselves and fast according to what he mentions in verses 6-7.

No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.

Isaiah 58:6-7 NLT

Fasting is something I occasionally struggle with. Not only is hard to not eat food, but it’s also so hard to fast wholeheartedly. Sometimes instead of spending time with God, I spend time doing other things.

Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind.

Isaiah 58:8 NLT

I am grateful to have also experienced the power of fasting. When I was able to have the right mentality and the right intentions I was able to see God work in my life.

The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.

Isaiah 58:11 NLT

Prayer:Lord thank you for continuing to guide me. In Luke when Jesus fasted, he was also tempted. Help me to remember that we should not live off of bread alone and you give us the strength to push past the temptations. Please help me remember that the purpose of fasting is to seek you. In Jesus's name Amen .
